Many folks consider this a classic work and perhaps when it was originally published there was novelty to telling this type of human level story without resorting to sci-fi tropes etc. But my words would fall short of how stunning it is to feast your brain on, so you should probably just feed it to your own brain instead of listening to me.

I hadn’t known much of McKean outside of his cover work for Neil Gaiman and Morrison’s Arkh I bought this on a cxges whim today when I should have been doing other things.

I tried to read it in the car on my vacation, and it was so heavy that after sitting with it on my lap for about a half an hour, I had to put it down because it was starting to strain my legs. To eventually to encounter Cageswhere in one sequence a King loses his temper and yells at everyone and turns into a huge shouty cartoon figure to do so…that was exciting. And who’s to say those are really separate categories, or, ahem, separate cages?
One of the ddave seems to be under some kind of curse where everything he loves is taken by two shadowy figures and he’s practically a prisoner in his own home. I was intrigued by having this cavalier, playful attitude inside of a comic.
So with a friend I suggested a brief sojourn at our local comics shop. Thanks for telling us about the problem.

High on the wonder that was The Sandman, but near the end of my first phase of comic collecting, I started grabbing the first issues of Cages when they were being released, but stopped, and due to their odd physical shape and my constant moving, they became damaged and it appears I no longer have them. An Artist of the Floating World: Based on the content, I believe this was the aim of Dave McKean. It was also really heavy in subject.
