The Caves of Steel is a futuristic murder mystery set on an Earth about millennium into the future. Asimov was a long-time member and Vice President of Mensa International, albeit reluctantly; he described some members of that organization as “brain-proud and aggressive about their IQs” He took more joy in being president of the American Humanist Association. Now I’m not so sure, and that’s a good thing. I always assumed Asimov would be wordier, more difficult to read, but I was pleased to discover the opposite.
The Spacer worlds are rich, have low population density average population of one hundred million eachand use robot labor heavily. They live roughly three millennia in Earth’s future, a time when hyperspace travel has been discovered, and a few worlds relatively close to Earth have been colonized—fifty planets known as the ” Spacer worlds “.

The sliding sidewalks in the novel really reminded me of Heinlein’s sliding sidewalks in many of his stories that can and will take people almost anywhere they want to go. Spacers are offworld colonists used to bovedad population, relative wealth, and long life spans.
Just the details were missing. This book had a couple of moments that were enjoyable ed well-written, primarily the two or three action scenes, and the denouement.
Earth’s population has been sequestered in cities and subjected to strict rationing. To maintain said comfort, they are obviously keen to keep Earthmen firmly out. It was an interesting view of the future, that humans would survive on yeast molds, some other modified hydrocarbons, and hydroponics as opposed to the living biomass upon which we subsist today.
I really thought I had. I give it a 3 based on the naivety some issues are treated and in general the style and the course of the events is not as polished and flowing as in his latter novels. Some of the characters were lackluster, especially the protagonist Elijah Baley. Brief synopsis of story: And Baley having to solve the murder down to the minute before midnightI’m sure this was supposed to come off as dramatic but was so lame it was ridiculous.
There are too many people and their numbers are constantly growing; soon they will pass the point of sustainability on Earth.
